Teaching Philosophy

Good technique matters, but technique is a means rather than the final objective.

Vov's approach centres on helping students understand how and why the Violin works. Technical problems are identified and addressed systematically, while interpretation, communication and musical understanding develop alongside them.

Students are encouraged to listen critically, ask questions, solve problems and gradually take greater responsibility for their own playing. The aim is not simply to learn how to perform one particular piece, but to develop skills that can be transferred to the next piece — and eventually to become increasingly independent of the teacher.

Professional performance experience also informs the studio. Preparation, collaboration, communication, stagecraft and the ability to respond when something unexpected happens are treated as genuine musical skills.

Success is measured against the individual student. It might mean:

• achieving an examination or Diploma;
• preparing an HSC programme;
• winning or simply entering a first competition;
• successfully auditioning for an ensemble;
• becoming a confident orchestra leader;
• preparing for tertiary study;
• returning to the violin after many years;
• performing confidently for other people;
• mastering something that once seemed impossible
• Or simply just picking up the instrument and growing your love and appreciation for it.

Learning Pathways

There is no single pathway through the studio. Programmes are developed according to each student's age, experience, interests and objectives.

Beginners & Developing Violinists

Students can begin from their first experience with the instrument and develop secure foundations in:

• posture and physical setup;
• bowing;
• intonation;
• rhythm;
• reading;
• listening;
• basic technique;
• repertoire;
• effective practice habits.

The emphasis is on establishing good habits early while developing curiosity, confidence and enjoyment of the instrument.

AMEB / ABRSM / TRINITY Examinations

Preparation is available from beginner levels through to advanced examinations and Diploma study.

Students can work towards:

• AMEB graded examinations;
• AMEB Certificate of Performance and higher Diplomas;
• ABRSM examinations;
• ABRSM Diploma pathways;
• other appropriate examination goals.

Preparation encompasses technique, scales, repertoire, interpretation, sight-reading, aural development, musical knowledge and performing under examination conditions.

The examination is treated as part of the student's musical development, rather than the sole purpose of lessons.

HSC Music

Specialised preparation is available for students undertaking HSC Music, including:

• repertoire selection;
• performance programme development;
• technical preparation;
• interpretation;
• performance presentation;
• assessment preparation;
• contemporary Australian repertoire;
• preparation of works relevant to HSC requirements.

Through Vov's work with Australian composers and Australia's Musical Canvas, students can also engage directly with contemporary Australian repertoire and the musical ideas behind it.

Scholarships, Competitions & Auditions

Students preparing for performance opportunities can receive assistance with:

• school music scholarships;
• eisteddfods;
• competitions;
• youth and school orchestra auditions;
• tertiary auditions;
• performance programmes;
• repertoire selection;
• stagecraft;
• preparation for performing under pressure.

The objective is not simply to prepare the notes, but to prepare the performance.

Advanced & Diploma Students

Advanced violinists can work intensively on:

• technical development;
• advanced repertoire;
• interpretation;
• Diploma programmes;
• recital preparation;
• audition repertoire;
• performance psychology and preparation;
• professional musicianship.

Adult Students

Adult students are welcome, whether:

• learning for the first time;
• returning after many years;
• seeking to improve existing technique;
• wanting to explore particular repertoire;
• or simply wanting the violin to remain part of their lives.

Examinations are entirely optional. Lessons can be structured around the repertoire and musical objectives that matter to the individual.

Beyond the Traditional Violin Lesson

Vov's professional career has encompassed classical repertoire, contemporary Australian music, salon and world music, theatre, popular repertoire, recording and ensemble leadership.

Where appropriate to the student, lessons can extend into:

These are not compulsory additions to a conventional violin programme. They are available when they support the interests and development of the individual student.

Recent Student Success — Highlights 2025 & 2026

Some highlights from the past year in the studio:

• One student awarded their LRSM from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music

• One student completing a Bachelor of Music (Performance) in Ghana, studying entirely through online lessons

• Six students awarded the Certificate of Performance from the Australian Music Examinations Board

• Three students appointed Leaders of their High School Orchestras

• School Concerto Competition winner.

About Vov Dylan - Violinist and Educator

Vov Dylan has taught violin and developed young musicians for more than 25 years, working with students from their first lessons through to advanced examinations, HSC Music, tertiary auditions, professional performance and teaching careers.

His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Performance Studies from the University of Sydney and an Associate Diploma in Violin Performance (AMusA). His studies in performance, alongside a career spent working professionally on stage and in the recording studio, have shaped an approach to teaching that considers not only how a student plays the violin, but how musicians prepare, communicate, perform and develop an individual musical voice.

Vov has taught privately and within schools since 1999, with experience encompassing individual tuition, ensemble direction, workshops, masterclasses and educational programmes. His teaching has included long-term involvement with schools across Sydney, while his students have progressed through AMEB and ABRSM examinations, HSC Music, scholarships and competitions to tertiary music study and professional careers.

His contribution to string education extends beyond the teaching studio. Vov has been engaged by the Australian Strings Association (AUSTA), has written for its national publication Stringendo, and has contributed published analysis and educational material examining Australian repertoire. Through Australia's Musical Canvas, he is also developing performance and educational programmes that connect senior secondary students with contemporary Australian composers and repertoire.

Central to his teaching is the belief that technical development should serve musical communication. Students are encouraged to understand why they are playing something, to develop the technical tools necessary to express it, and to become increasingly independent musicians rather than simply reproducing instructions given during a lesson.

Vov's continuing career as a concert and recording violinist means that the principles discussed in lessons are also tested continually in professional practice — through performance preparation, collaboration, recording, repertoire development and the practical realities of working as a musician.

Students are not expected to pursue professional careers. Some work towards diplomas, tertiary study and performance careers; others learn because playing the violin is something they want to have in their lives. The objective is to help each student develop the skills, understanding and confidence necessary to pursue their own musical goals.
