Homage was written in 2026, although its principal melody had accompanied the composer for many years before it was finally committed to paper. The inspiration for the work came from memories of Central European cafés, where conversation, food and music exist side by side and where the violin often serves as both entertainer and storyteller. The work draws upon the spirit of the gypsy violin tradition, blending lyrical melodies with moments of improvisatory freedom and dance-like energy. The work serves as a tribute to the late musician, entertainer and close friend Enzo Toppano. Throughout his career, Dylan admired Toppano's ability to connect directly with audiences through melody, humour and musical warmth. In many respects, Homage reflects the kind of piece Dylan imagines Toppano himself might have enjoyed performing. The opening unfolds freely, almost as an improvisation, before settling into a reflective Andante. Throughout the work, fragments of salon music, café repertoire and traditional gypsy-inspired gestures emerge and recede, creating a musical landscape shaped more by memory than by narrative. Lasting just over three minutes, Homage is both a tribute to a musical tradition and a personal reflection on the people whose artistry leaves a lasting imprint on our lives.
